Student Research

The following experiments were carried out as part of the Esperanza Academy summer intensive STEAM program in 2016. Although the students were new aquatic biologists, they happily provided support for sampling and analysis as part of the ongoing research program. Their efforts paid off handsomely when they used the field data to tell a story about their local water resources.

Estimating Phytoplankton Biomass using Fluorometry : Estimate how much biological “stuff” (biomass) is in your lake using this simple technique.

Algal Succession and Variability : Want to know more about what’s in your lake? Discover how everything changes in time and space.

Phytoplankton Biomass and Environmental Metrics : Gain a better understanding of what’s happening by comparing different environmental measurements.
